Swimming Strokes: Ellie Simmonds

As she waited nervously for the starter's gun to fire, her heart pounded rapidly like heavy footsteps on a hard stone floor. Every breath was tense as her goose-bumped body was held in a professional starting position. Every second built up a strong feeling of tenseness, as the strong odour of chlorine filled the pool. Everyone was all set and ready and then the starter's gun fired unexpectedly...

Each stroke pulled her along. She remembered what her coach had said: "Concentrate, lose yourself in the swimming..."

Before she knew it, it was over.

Ellie Simmonds had been so lost in her swimming that she hadn't realised she was literally one second faster than the rest - a new world record! The trophy was hers...
